CHALA

Gabriela Nirrino Riess

Corn is a foundational crop in America, the food par excellence.
When food mutates into a symbol, it is cultural resistance.
In CHALA I weave the pieces with fine strips of corn husk.
It is a long and laborious process.
The corn husk appears as an enduring element of the Americas.
What looks like waste, in an invisible way protects the earth and generates energy when it is thrown in the field.
In this sense, it is assimilated into silent populations throughout history: indigenous, women, poor.
It also symbolizes food sovereignty, the struggle of the original seeds against the invasion of genetically modified corn.
